Think Before You Drink this New Year’s Eve

Every year, emergency departments see patients with acute alcohol poisoning and a range of other alcohol related injuries.While it is understandable that people want to enjoy the festive season with a drink, the message is – drink in moderation!”Alcohol directly affects the central nervous system, slowing down its functions. Drowsiness, depression, nausea and lack of awareness are common effects.

“I’d encourage people to look at doing things a little differently this year.
  • Carefully plan your activities – make sure you have plenty to eat and drink, consider non-alcoholic options and have a driver or a safe place to stay before heading out.
  • Keep track of how much you are drinking – don’t let anyone pressure you into having another drink and say no to top ups.
  • Stick with friends and stay in safe places.
  • Slow your pace – sip a glass of water between alcoholic drinks or find an activity like darts or pool to slow you down.
  • Look after your mates. If someone is reacting badly to alcohol or other drugs, keep a close eye on them and don’t leave them alone. Get help immediately if it is needed.
  • If you host a party, take care of your guests. Provide non-alcoholic drinks, food and space for people to sleep the night. Avoid drinking games!
  • Remember that women cannot usually tolerate as much alcohol as men.
  • If you mix alcohol and drugs, you are more likely to have a bad reaction or experience. The effect is often unpredictable and can cause serious health problems.
  • Avoid joining a group where people take it in turns to shout others in the group.
